A GPA calculator turns letter grades into a single grade point average. Add each course with its grade (A+ through F) and credit hours, and the tool computes your weighted GPA on the standard 4.0 scale, where courses with more credits count more. A full letter-grade conversion table is included below so you can see exactly what each grade is worth.

Letter-grade conversion table (4.0 scale)
| Grade | Points | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| A+ | 4.0 | C+ | 2.3 |
| A | 4.0 | C | 2.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | C- | 1.7 |
| B+ | 3.3 | D+ | 1.3 |
| B | 3.0 | D | 1.0 |
| B- | 2.7 | F | 0.0 |
Standard unweighted 4.0 scale. Some schools weight honors/AP courses differently: check your school policy.
How is GPA calculated on the 4.0 scale?
Multiply each grade point value by its credit hours, add those quality points up, and divide by total credit hours. An A in a 3-credit course and a B in a 4-credit course gives (12 + 12) / 7 = 3.43.
This is a weighted GPA: a 4-credit course moves the average more than a 1-credit course. Unweighted GPAs treat every course equally regardless of credits.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
A weighted GPA accounts for credit hours (or course difficulty), while an unweighted GPA averages grade points equally. Most colleges use weighted GPA because not all courses carry equal weight.
This calculator is weighted by credit hours on the standard 4.0 scale. Honors and AP bumps vary by school and are not included.
What GPA do I need for a specific letter average?
Roughly: 3.7+ is an A average, 3.0+ is a B average, 2.0+ is a C average. Add your completed courses above, then experiment with future grades to see what you need.
Because weighting depends on credits, one A in a heavy course can offset a lower grade in a light one: the calculator shows this live.
Frequently asked questions
What grade scale does this calculator use?
The standard unweighted 4.0 scale: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
How do credit hours affect my GPA?
Each grade is multiplied by its credit hours before averaging, so a 4-credit course counts twice as much as a 2-credit course. Courses with zero credits are ignored.
Can I calculate GPA for future semesters?
Yes. Add planned courses with the grades you expect and the GPA updates instantly, which is useful for "what do I need" planning.
Does it handle pass/fail courses?
Pass/fail courses usually do not affect GPA. Leave them out, or set their credits to 0 so they are ignored in the calculation.
Is my grade data uploaded anywhere?
No. All GPA math runs in your browser. Your courses and grades never leave your device.
