Free PDF editor for annotating, highlighting and redacting PDF pages

A free PDF editor is an online tool that lets you annotate PDFs without installing software or signing up. This editor adds text, highlights, shapes and images to any PDF, redacts sensitive content securely, and deletes or reorders pages, all in your browser.

Files stay on your device. Very large PDFs may be slow on phones.

How to use the PDF Editor in 4 steps

  1. Drop a PDF into the upload area.
  2. Add text, highlights, shapes or images with the toolbar.
  3. Use Redact for sensitive content and the Pages panel to delete or reorder.
  4. Download the edited PDF with annotations burned in.

How can I edit a PDF online for free without signing up?

Drop your PDF into the upload area, then use the toolbar to add text, highlights, boxes, ellipses or images anywhere on the page. Drag annotations to move them and double-click text to edit it. When you are done, click Download edited PDF: annotations are burned in and your file never leaves your device.

It is a visual editor rather than a full Acrobat replacement: you add content on top of the page instead of reflowing the original text, which covers filling forms, signing, and marking up documents.

How do I permanently redact text in a PDF?

Select the Redact tool and draw boxes over the sensitive text, then download the edited PDF. Any page with redactions is flattened into an image on export, so the covered text no longer exists in the file at all: it cannot be selected, copied or recovered. The trade-off is that text on redacted pages is no longer selectable.

On pages without redactions, your added text exports as real, selectable PDF text. Only redacted pages are flattened, keeping the rest of your document searchable.

Frequently asked questions

Is this really free and unlimited?

Yes. No signup, no daily task caps (unlike Smallpdf's 2-tasks/day or Sejda's 3-tasks/hour), no watermark. Everything runs in your browser with open-source libraries.

Is the redaction secure?

Yes - with one trade-off. Any page you redact is flattened into an image on export, so the covered text no longer exists in the file at all. The trade-off: text on redacted pages isn't selectable anymore, and those pages get a bit larger.

Can I edit existing form fields or the original text?

Not directly - this is a visual editor, not a full Acrobat replacement. You add text on top of the page (great for filling forms visually), but you can't reflow or edit the PDF's original text objects.

Will my added text stay selectable/searchable?

Yes, on pages without redactions your added text is exported as real PDF text. On redacted pages everything becomes part of a flattened image.

Does my PDF get uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read, rendered and saved entirely on your device. Close the tab and nothing remains.

Any size limits?

No hard limit, but very large PDFs (hundreds of pages or huge scans) can be slow, especially on phones - rendering happens on your device's CPU.
