URL slug cleaner repairing a messy slug into a tidy SEO-friendly slug

A URL slug cleaner is a free online tool that repairs an existing messy slug or full URL into a tidy, SEO-friendly slug. Paste something like /Blog/My__MESSY Post!!!?id=9: it lowercases, swaps underscores and spaces for hyphens, strips special characters, and removes clutter. Unlike the Slug Generator, which creates a slug from a fresh title, this tool fixes slugs you already have.

How do I clean up a messy URL slug?

Short answer: Paste the slug or the full URL, one per line, and press Clean slugs. The tool extracts the slug part, lowercases it, turns spaces and underscores into hyphens, removes special characters, collapses repeated hyphens, and trims the ends. Each result shows the cleaned slug plus a note of what changed.

For full URLs, tick Output full URL to get the complete link back with only the slug portion repaired.

What is the difference between this and the Slug Generator?

Short answer: The Slug Generator creates a brand-new slug from a fresh title you type. The Slug Cleaner repairs slugs that already exist: pasted URLs from a CMS migration, imported content with encoded characters, or old links with underscores and uppercase letters. Use the generator for new pages and the cleaner for fixing old ones.

Both produce lowercase, hyphenated, SEO-friendly output; they just start from different inputs.

Should I remove stop words from my slugs?

Short answer: Usually not. Words like the, and, and of add little SEO weight but keep slugs readable, and removing them from an already-indexed URL forces a redirect. The option exists for cases where a slug is excessively long and every character counts, such as generated product URLs. Keep it off unless length is a real problem.

If you do shorten an indexed slug, add a 301 redirect from the old URL so rankings and links transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this URL slug cleaner free?

Yes. Clean unlimited slugs with no account and no limits. It runs entirely in your browser.

Can I paste a full URL instead of just a slug?

Yes. The tool detects full URLs, cleans the last path segment (or the whole path), and can output the complete URL with the repaired slug.

What characters are removed?

Anything that is not a letter, number, or your chosen separator: punctuation, symbols, emoji, and extra whitespace. Accented characters become their plain equivalents when diacritic stripping is on.

Why hyphens instead of underscores?

Google treats hyphens as word separators but joins words around underscores, so best_practices reads as one word while best-practices reads as two. Hyphens are the SEO-safe default.

Will cleaning change my live page address?

Only if you apply it. The tool gives you the cleaned slug; updating the actual URL on your site and adding a redirect is a separate step you control.

Is my data uploaded anywhere?

No. All cleaning happens locally in your browser.
