An HTML formatter is a free online tool that takes compressed or messy HTML and re-indents it so nested tags are easy to follow. Paste minified page source or a template snippet and get clean, consistently indented markup you can actually read and debug.
Your formatted HTML will appear here...
How do I format HTML online?
Paste your HTML into the input box and press Format. Block-level tags get their own lines with nested indentation, while inline elements stay together on one line. Press Copy output to grab the cleaned-up markup.
This formatter is a readability aid, not a validator: it does not fix broken tags, it just lays out what you gave it clearly. For strict checking, run your markup through an HTML validator first, then format the clean version here.
Will formatting change how my page looks?
No, formatting only changes whitespace between tags. Inline elements are kept on single lines precisely so text spacing is preserved, and void elements are never given closing tags.
The one exception is pre and textarea content: whitespace inside those elements is significant, so the formatter keeps their inner content on its own lines without re-indenting it, protecting code samples and preformatted text.
Frequently asked questions
Is this HTML formatter free?
Yes. Format unlimited HTML with no account and no limits. It runs entirely in your browser.
Does it fix broken HTML?
No. It only re-indents the markup you paste. Unclosed or mismatched tags stay as they are, which actually makes them easier to spot in the indented output.
How are inline elements handled?
Inline tags like a, strong, em, span, and code are kept on the same line as their surrounding text, so paragraphs and sentences are not broken apart.
What about pre and textarea content?
Content inside pre, textarea, and script/style blocks is preserved on its own lines without re-indentation, since extra whitespace there would change the output.
Is my HTML uploaded anywhere?
No. Formatting happens locally in your browser. Your markup never leaves your device.
