GPA to percentage calculator converting a 4.0 scale GPA into a percentage

This GPA to percentage calculator turns a grade point average back into the percentage score most employers, scholarship forms and non-US universities ask for. It handles the 4.0 and 5.0 scales with the standard proportional formula and the 10-point CGPA scale with the CBSE × 9.5 formula used across India.

Convert your GPA

Your percentage 87.5% (3.5 ÷ 4) × 100 = 87.5%

GPA to percentage formula

For the 4.0 and 5.0 scales: percentage = (GPA ÷ scale maximum) × 100. For a 10-point CGPA: percentage = CGPA × 9.5 - the multiplier CBSE publishes and most Indian universities accept, derived from the average performance of board candidates, which is why it is 9.5 and not a round 10.

Worked examples: a 3.7 GPA is (3.7 ÷ 4) × 100 = 92.5%. A 4.2 on the 5.0 scale is (4.2 ÷ 5) × 100 = 84%. A 9.0 CGPA is 9.0 × 9.5 = 85.5%. If you need the proportional figure for a CGPA as well, the calculator shows it under the main result - the two differ because the × 9.5 convention deliberately maps a perfect 10.0 CGPA to 95% rather than 100%.

Need the letter grade that goes with a percentage instead? The percentage to GPA calculator converts in the opposite direction with the US band table, and the letter grade converter shows points and percentage bands for every grade from A+ to F.

Why schools sometimes give a different percentage

Because many schools convert through letter bands rather than proportionally: a 3.0 GPA is a B, and a B spans 83–86%, so a band-based school may quote ~85% where the formula gives 75%.

For applications, scholarships and jobs, quote the figure your institution publishes if it publishes one; otherwise the proportional (or × 9.5) figure from this page is the standard estimate every major converter uses. Keep the original GPA on the form whenever there is space for it - a converted percentage is an aid, not a replacement credential.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?

87.5% on the 4.0 scale: (3.5 ÷ 4) × 100 = 87.5%. On the 5.0 scale a 3.5 GPA is 70%. In US letter bands, 3.5 sits between a B+ and an A-.

What percentage is a 3.0 GPA?

75% on the 4.0 scale with the proportional formula. Schools converting by letter bands treat 3.0 as a B, which spans 83–86% - the formula figure, 75%, is the one most converters and forms expect.

How do I convert a CGPA to a percentage?

Multiply the CGPA by 9.5 - the CBSE formula. An 8.0 CGPA is 76%, an 8.5 is 80.75% and a 9.0 is 85.5%. Some individual universities publish their own multiplier; theirs wins if it exists.

Is a 4.0 GPA always 100%?

Proportionally, yes: (4.0 ÷ 4) × 100 = 100%. In band terms an A spans 93–100%, so a 4.0 GPA means an average in the A band rather than a literal perfect score in every class.

Can I convert a percentage back to GPA here?

Yes - the percentage to GPA calculator converts in the other direction, by both the proportional formula and US letter bands, on the 4.0, 5.0 and 10.0 scales.
