Letter grade converter showing GPA points and percentage bands for letter grades

This letter grade converter shows what any letter grade is worth everywhere it matters: GPA points on the standard 4.0 scale, the percentage band the grade represents, and the weighted points it earns in honors (+0.5) and AP/IB (+1.0) classes on the 5.0 scale. It also converts in reverse - enter a percentage and get the letter grade.

The standard unweighted scale used by most US high schools and colleges. A small number of schools award 4.3 for an A+; if yours does, its published scale is the one to use.

How weighted grades work

Weighted GPAs reward harder classes: the same letter grade earns more points in an honors class (+0.5) or an AP/IB class (+1.0), which is how a GPA can rise above 4.0 to a 5.0 maximum. A B in an AP class (4.0 points) counts the same as an A in a regular class.

Not every school weights, and those that do cap and apply the bonus differently - some cap the total weighted GPA at 4.5, others exclude certain subjects. Colleges commonly strip weighting out and recalculate every applicant's GPA on the plain 4.0 scale, which is why the unweighted column remains the universal reference. To average letter grades across a whole course list with credit hours, use the GPA calculator; to plan what a final exam must be, the grade calculator solves for the exact score needed.

Why plus and minus grades matter

Each plus or minus step is worth 0.3 points (0.4 between B+ 3.3 and A- 3.7's neighbours), so the border between two letter bands is one of the highest-leverage places in a transcript: raising a B+ to an A- adds more than raising a mid-B by the same effort in percentage terms.

This is also why two students with the same rounded percentage average can hold noticeably different GPAs - bands, not raw percentages, drive the points. When you convert a whole transcript, convert grade by grade with this chart rather than converting the final average.

Frequently asked questions

What GPA is a B+?

A B+ is worth 3.3 points on the standard 4.0 scale, and represents a percentage of 87–89%. In an honors class it is worth 3.8 points; in an AP/IB class, 4.3.

Is an A- a 3.7 GPA grade?

Yes. An A- is 3.7 points on the 4.0 scale, for a percentage of 90–92%. A plain A and an A+ are both 4.0 on the standard scale (a few schools award 4.3 for A+).

What letter grade is 85%?

85% is a B on the standard US scale (83–86% band), worth 3.0 points. Some schools use a 10-point band where 85% is still a B; a small number use 80–89% for B, so check your school's chart if the boundary matters.

Can a GPA be higher than 4.0?

Yes, on a weighted scale: honors and AP/IB bonuses push the maximum to 4.5 or 5.0. An unweighted GPA can never exceed 4.0, and colleges often recalculate weighted GPAs back to 4.0 for comparison.

What is the GPA for a C+?

A C+ is 2.3 points on the 4.0 scale (77–79%). It is 2.8 points in an honors class and 3.3 in an AP/IB class.
