Percentage to GPA calculator converting a percentage score to a 4.0 scale GPA

This percentage to GPA calculator converts a percentage score into a grade point average on the scale your school or target university uses. Pick the US letter-band method (the one most American schools publish) or the proportional formula used by most online converters, on the 4.0, 5.0 or 10.0 (CGPA) scale.

Convert your percentage

Your GPA (4.0 scale) 3.00 (75 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.00 - letter grade B

Letter bands apply to the 4.0 and 5.0 scales. The 10.0 CGPA scale always uses the CBSE division (percentage ÷ 9.5), which is the published standard for that scale.

How to convert a percentage to GPA

Two methods are in everyday use. The proportional formula is GPA = (percentage ÷ 100) × scale maximum - 85% on a 4.0 scale is (85 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.40. The US letter-band method first maps the percentage to a letter grade (85% is a B), then uses that grade's points (B = 3.0).

Neither method is "wrong" - they answer slightly different questions. The proportional formula treats the percentage as a pure ratio and is what most online converters, including this one by default, report. The band method mirrors how US registrars actually record grades, so a transcript conversion for an American university is usually closer to the band result. When a university publishes its own conversion table, that table overrides both.

Converting an Indian percentage to a US GPA

First turn the percentage into a CGPA if your university uses the 10-point scale (percentage ÷ 9.5), then convert the CGPA to the 4.0 scale (× 0.4). An 85% score is an 8.95 CGPA and about a 3.58 US GPA by that route - or 3.40 by the direct proportional formula.

The small gap between the two routes is normal and well documented; credential evaluators such as WES publish their own country tables and may land on either side. Report your original percentage or CGPA on applications whenever the form allows it, and let the institution convert - self-converted GPAs are for planning, not official records.

Frequently asked questions

Is 75% a 3.0 GPA?

Yes, with the proportional formula: (75 ÷ 100) × 4 = 3.0 on the 4.0 scale. With the US letter-band method, 75% is a C, worth 2.0 points. Most online converters report 3.0; a US school reading your transcript would usually apply its band table.

What is 70% in GPA?

70% is a 2.8 GPA with the proportional formula (70 ÷ 100 × 4 = 2.8). By letter bands it is a C-, worth 1.7 points. On the 10-point CGPA scale it is 70 ÷ 9.5 = 7.37.

How do I convert a percentage to GPA on the 4.0 scale?

Proportionally: divide the percentage by 100 and multiply by 4 (85% → 3.40). By bands: find the letter grade for the percentage (85% → B) and use its points (3.0). This calculator runs both methods so you can compare.

What percentage is a 3.5 GPA?

A 3.5 GPA is 87.5% proportionally (3.5 ÷ 4 × 100). In letter bands it sits between a B+ (87–89%) and an A-, so schools would describe it as roughly an 87–89% average.

Is the proportional or the band method correct?

Both are legitimate conventions. US institutions generally convert by letter bands; most quick online converters use the proportional formula. If an institution publishes a conversion table, its table is the correct one for that application.
